Why Does My Tooth Need to Be Treated Again?

The point of root canal therapy is to remove infected tissues and bacteria to prevent them from causing further damage. If the root canal wasn’t cleaned properly (which might happen if your tooth contains extra, oddly shaped, or restricted canals that weren’t found originally), some harmful debris could be left behind, leading to a reinfection.

In other cases, the cleaning was successful, but the inside of the tooth ended up being exposed to new bacteria, often due to:

  • New decay
  • A fracture in the tooth’s enamel
  • Waiting too long to place a crown or another restoration over the exposed tooth
  • The crown or restoration itself becoming cracked

No matter the cause, if you notice any pain or swelling around a previously treated tooth, get in touch with us immediately so that the new infection can be dealt with as quickly as possible.

First, Dr. Olsson will examine your tooth and explain the available options for treatment. If you decide to move forward with endodontic retreatment, you’ll follow a procedure that’s similar to root canal therapy with some key additions. After the site is numbed, the tooth is reopened, and the filling material that was placed before will be removed. We can then perform a thorough cleaning, using a surgical microscope to make sure that we haven’t missed any canals. Once that’s done, the root canals will be resealed, and the tooth will have a temporary filling placed until you can receive another permanent crown or restoration.

As an endodontist, Dr. Olsson has years of experience and training in performing retreatments. With her expertise combined with cutting-edge dental technology, she can save even extensively damaged teeth, ensuring that you’ll be able to use them to eat, speak, and smile for years to come.

Alternatives to Endodontic Retreatment

Depending on the situation, we might recommend a procedure other than endodontic retreatment to treat your infection. For example, endodontic surgery is usually offered if root canal therapy fails and the damage has spread beyond the tip of the roots of the tooth. Sometimes surgery might even be combined with retreatment. Of course, every patient is unique, and some cases are more complex than others; the only way to decide which treatment is right for you is to discuss it with your endodontist at South Sound Endodontics.
